The event – which has become a regular feature in YesCymru’s annual calendar – is designed to raise awareness of the campaign to return control of the Crown Estate to the people of Wales.
The Crown Estate is a corporation responsible for managing the monarchy's substantial property interests.
Its profits go to the UK Treasury, with a substantial portion going to the royal family through the Sovereign grant.
The Crown Estate owns vast swathes of Wales, including a staggering 65% of the Welsh foreshore and riverbed and more than 50,000 acres of land.
In recent years its income from assets in Wales has increased substantially because of the growth of offshore windfarms, which pay the Crown Estate to lease the sea bed.
As of April 2024, the value of its holdings in Wales had increased from £96m to over £853m between 2020 and 2023.
Evidence shows that there is widespread support for returning control of the Crown Estate to the people of Wales. A 2022 poll showed that 75% of people in Wales were in favour of doing so, and YesCymru has often been at the forefront of this campaign.
YesCymru chair, Phyl Griffith said:
"Banners on Bridges has grown to become much more than a chance for fans of independence to unfurl their flags, it's become a nationwide phenomenon!
Following the format established by the pioneering work of groups like YesPontypwl, groups across Wales soon followed suit and, especially during the socially distanced banners on bridges events held in lockdown have found it a great source of energising support.
I'd challenge anyone to pick up a YesCymru flag and take it to the bridge based event in their area and not feel inspired by the cocophany of horns they'll hear! The honks, the thumbs up, the clenched fists and shouts of encouragement from motorists can very quickly be numbered in the hundreds on a typical Banners on Bridges event so be prepared to be amazed at the reaction!"
This coming weekend sees the biggest Banners on Bridges to date. Over 20 YesCymru groups will take part this time. Why not join them? Visit our website to find your nearest event: - www.yes.cymru/banners_on_bridges_national_campaign
