This week at the National Eisteddfod, YesCymru Chair Rob Hughes launched the movement’s 2032 campaign, setting a clear and ambitious objective: to secure a referendum on Welsh independence in 2032.
The announcement was made at a public meeting in Pabell y Cymdeithasau on the Eisteddfod field on Sunday, 2 August.
The campaign marks an important new phase for YesCymru. Welsh independence is already firmly established within the national political debate. By setting 2032 as the target for a referendum, the movement has provided a defined timetable and a specific political objective around which supporters can organise and build public support.
Speaking at the public meeting, Rob Hughes said:
“I think we’ve had enough of wandering through life without giving us and our supporters and the people of Wales something to have as a focus.”
The 2032 campaign will focus on growing support for independence, answering the practical questions people have about Wales’s future and building the political pressure needed to secure a referendum.
Rob Hughes added:
“I think what we need to do is persuade the people of Wales that an independent Wales will provide a better future for them and for the generations to come.”
The campaign will not only make the case for holding a referendum, but also set out a positive vision for the kind of country an independent Wales could become.
He closed the public meeting by saying:
“Let’s build a country that is fair, tolerant and welcoming, and use the skills, belief and ambition of the people of Wales to create a country that works for all of us, for our children and for the generations to come.”
Over the next six years, YesCymru will work to turn support for independence into a clear demand for a referendum, while setting out the political and practical steps required to achieve that objective.
The launch follows YesCymru’s first-ever meeting with a Welsh Government minister last week. Rob Hughes met the Cabinet Minister for Government Effectiveness and the Constitution - Dafydd Trystan Davies MS - to discuss the constitutional future of Wales and the movement’s aim of securing and winning a referendum on independence.
Members, supporters and visitors to the National Eisteddfod are being encouraged to call at the YesCymru stand to learn more about the campaign. Further details about the work required to build support and secure a referendum will be published over the coming weeks and months.
